Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

PM - 3.1 miles outside.  It was still extremely hot out at 9:30 PM - still over 100 degrees. (gack!).  It was also blowing a little dust.  That being said, the run wasn't too bad.  I didn't get to run earlier this week because I was at a family reunion and didn't bring any running clothes with me.  Not to mention I was tied up pretty much all day every day with watching our boys so that Lybi didn't have to over-exert herself and have a setback in her recovery.  Average pace tonight of 8:10/mile.

PM - 3 easy miles outside in the heat of the night.  Although I think the temperature was about the same as last night, tonight's run felt much easier, for some reason.  Perhaps it was because of the lack of wind, or perhaps it was because I didn't eat too much for dinner.  In any case, I felt a lot better today.  Average pace of 7:55/mile.

PM - 4 easy miles outside.  It was a relatively balmy 94 degrees outside tonight, compared to a couple days ago, so it felt pretty nice outside.  I decided I was going to do 4 miles today and was able to do it feeling pretty good.  I still need to lose a lot of weight, but at least my running form is starting to come around.  I will keep it easy for several months - no speedwork - so that I can build up my base.  I would love to be able to do London's Run next year and break 1:30 (for that matter, I would love to run around 1:25), but we will see how things go a day at a time.  I also decided to start logging my food intake at mypyramidtracker.gov, instead of trying to go back on weight watchers.  They have several tools there that can help me determine where I need to work on improving my diet, and I will be logging my exercise there as well.

PM - 2.5 miles outside, later in the evening.  The cooling trend continues - it was only 90 degrees out tonight when I stepped out the door.  Alas, I think that it is not going to continue.  We're supposed to heat up again this week.  Running today felt a bit harder than yesterday, but that could be from a long day, from running longer yesterday (if you can call 4 miles longer), or from not enough sleep.  Dunno.  In any case, average pace was 7:53/mile.

Yay!  I got to run in the morning today!  It was gorgeous out, none of this "low temperature of 92 degrees" or something.  Weather.com says it is currently 79 degrees outside, and it sure felt nice.  I hope I can continue to run in the morning.  It feels better, and I don't wake up so stiff as I do when I run in the evening shortly before going to bed.  Average pace today of 7:46/mile.  I have also already lost a fair bit of weight, just from being able to track my food intake and see where my calories are coming from.  Of course, having fast Sunday yesterday didn't hurt either . . . :)  I am also planning on walking during lunch again today, which I did once last week and absolutely loved.

PM - 3 miles outside, average pace of 7:36/mile.  I started off nice and easy, and my pace just picked up as the run went on.  It felt pretty good.  Last mile was 7:04, without trying, although I could tell that it was a fairly good amount of exertion once I stopped.  I also walked 2 miles during lunch today, but I'm not counting that under my running miles.

PM - 4 miles outside.  The weather was a bit warmer tonight - up around 100 degrees when I went out to run at 8:30.  My legs felt kind of heavy tonight, and it took a while to get into a good rhythm.  Average pace of 7:57/mile.  I walked another 2 miles during lunch again as well, which felt really good.

PM - 3 miles outside.  Weather was cooler than last night - about 88 or so when I headed out at 9:30 (my wife had enrichment tonight, so she didn't get home until then).  First two miles were good, average just under 8:00/mile.  The third mile, for some reason, I cranked up a bit without realizing it consciously.  Last mile was 7:02, for an average pace of 7:32 for the total run.  Felt pretty good.  Foot is feeling pretty good, legs are a little bit sore on the shins, but I won't increase the mileage until they start to feel a little better.  I am starting to feel my years a bit - I can tell at 35 that I don't recover as quickly as I did when I was a teenager.  There's a depressing thought . . .

PM - 5 miles outside.  It was a bit warmer, but I decided since I didn't walk during lunch, I was going to do 5 miles today.  Felt pretty good, could tell the heat was affecting me some (it was 99 degrees at 8:30 pm).  Average pace of 8:03/mile.

Lunch - ran outside today.  Although it was fairly hot (about 100), it was still pretty nice.  I found that my legs had a great deal more pop in them then they do in the evening, which was nice, and it also seemed to be easier for me cardiovascular-wise, although that may just be due to the fact that my fitness is improving.  Nevertheless, I enjoyed the run, but was sweating like crazy afterwards.  Average pace of 7:45/mile.

Lunch - 3.11 (5K) on the treadmill at the fitness center.  My little run outside yesterday served to turn my shoulders as red as a cooked lobster, so I will be inside for a few days while my sunburn heals.  Steady 8:00 pace for the entire run.  Felt pretty good.

AM - 4 glorious miles in the morning before work.  Compared to running at noon or in the evening, it was a heavenly 78 degrees out.  The only drawback for me to running in the morning is that it takes me a little while to get going, whereas at noon my legs are nice and warmed up and have some pop to them right from the get-go.  But I will take having to warm up along with the cooler temps for now over having to run inside on the treadmill or outside in 100 degree heat.  Once the temps cool down during the day, I will probably switch to doing most of my miles at lunchtime.

Lunch - 4 easy miles on the treadmill at the fitness center again.  I was originally hoping to get up early and run this morning before work, but it was not to be.  Average pace of 8:00/mile.  Felt a little difficult at first, but then I got into a rhythm, and it got much easier.

Lunch - 4.75 miles on the treadmill at the fitness center.  Read an interesting article this morning regarding weight loss and intervals that made me want to try it out.  Decided to do some longer interval sessions at MP, and some short sessions at about 1/2 marathon pace.  The workout felt really good, but my foot is a little bit sore afterwards.  Will ice it when I get home.

Lunch - 4.5 miles on the treadmill today.  I am happy to report that after some soreness in my foot yesterday, it feels better today.  Although I didn't get a chance to ice it like I had planned, I did get to go for a walk with my wife later in the evening, and I think that helped.  First 20 minutes at 8:00 pace, then bumped up the pace (accidentally) to 7:00/mile.  I had meant to increase only to 7:30 pace, but didn't realize it until I had run a mile and I was ahead of where I had anticipated.  Last mile at 7:30 pace.  Wore my HR monitor chest strap again today.  HR was pretty good for the first mile - in the 140's, but then it started climbing up.  This is where I can tell my aerobic/cardiovascular fitness is still lacking.

Lunch - hit the treadmill again.  Since the foot felt better yesterday, I decided I would go ahead and do some more interval training to try and get the weight off.  4 minutes at 8:00 pace, followed by 4 minutes at 7:00 pace, then 2 minutes at 6:20 pace, repeated thrice.  Finished up with another 2 minutes at 6:20 pace and then cooled down with 4 more minutes at approx. 8:00 pace to hit a total of 5 miles.  Total time of 36:00 for the run.  The good news is that the foot felt fine.  Stretched out a little bit afterwards, especially the foot and calves.
