Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

The prodigal son returns!  After a lenghty absence due to lingering foot pain, I have decided to start up again.  I have been getting back into shape by doing the P90X program (and have already been seeing results after 30 days), and decided that to step things up a notch, it was time to get back into running over my lunch break.  I have been walking about 2-3 miles over lunch, so not totally sedentary during the day.  Today was day 1 of running again, and boy, did it feel good.  I feel like P90X has been developing muscles I don't normally use, and as such, my stride felt very efficient.  Felt pretty easy to maintain sub-8:00 pace.  Did 4 miles today - up north on Priest/Galvin pkwy past the Zoo/Botanical Gardens, and then back again.  Going out is somewhat uphill, so the fact that I was able to maintain 7:45 pace the first half was pretty cool.  I was kind of waiting to have to slow down from either my legs or lungs complaining, but it never happened.  And, of course, since it is downhill on the way back, I ran a negative split.  I will have to take it easier tomorrow, though.

4 miles during lunch.  started off kind of fast, then backed off.  Averaged 8 min/mile for the first 3.5 miles, then threw in a surge for 0.25 miles.  Slowed down for the last 0.25 to finish the run.

Lunch - 4 miles outside in beautiful weather - right about 70 degrees.  I took a completely different route today and did about half of the run on dirt trails going around a golf course.  However, lest you think that it was nice and flat, it was quite the opposite.  Most of the first half was uphill, then I hit a service road of sorts heading west (and also a bit downhill) and took that until it ended, then got back on the trail.  Took the trail pretty much back to Galvin parkway, where I kind of pushed the pace for the last 1/2 mile.  Ended up averaging 7:15 for the run - a bit fast, but I'll take it.  It felt pretty good, although I could feel it in my lungs.  Legs felt fine the entire run, although my calves tightened up within the first mile and were tight for the rest of the run.  Stretched out the calves after the run - they are doing okay now.  Hopefully not too sore tomorrow so I can run again - last week was the "get back into running again", and this week I am hoping to be able to run every day of the week, although possibly not on Saturday.

Boy, and I thought Monday's run was a bit too fast . . .

I felt really good today, and headed up my normal run, where I go north on Priest/Galvin parkway to McDowell, and then headed left on McDowell for about .15 miles to get to 2 miles before turning around.  First mile was 7:39, second mile was 7:24.  On the turnaround, the third mile was 6:57 and the last mile was 6:26, with a fairly strong surge the last 1/2 mile.  Average pace of 7:07/mile.  My calves did not tighten up today, like they did on Monday.  My legs felt fine the entire run, felt like my lungs had a bit of a hard time keeping up on the last 1/2 mile, but that is probably to be expected when I was dropping under 6:00 pace.  I'm going to try to run tomorrow too - I ended up not running on Tuesday, because I did the plyometrics workout on P90X, and it trashed my legs.  I did, however, still walk a couple miles on Tuesday.

Lunch - 5 miles outside at a much easier pace than yesterday.  I woke up at 5 to do my P90X workout (yoga) and felt too tired, so I skipped it this morning, and determined to run a little further to partially make up for it.  I also decided to work really hard on taking it easier today.  Ran the same route north up Priest/Galvin Parkway, and turned left on McDowell, but kept going on McDowell until I hit 2.5 miles, then turned around.  Took it easier on the downhill on the way back, but still dropped my overall average from 7:56/mile to 7:45/mile.  However, I felt much better after today's run.

Lunch - 5 miles outside.  It was really nice outside - low 60's, and there was a brisk wind blowing which made it feel a bit cooler, but I loved it.  Averaged 7:30 for the run, including speeding up towards the end.
