Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - 4 miles on my own, then 2 miles with Sparky.

Started off at a nice easy pace, then slowly picked up the pace until I was at about 7:30-7:40 pace.  At the 2 mile mark, turned around and picked up the pace, 3rd mile was 6:55.  Still felt a little harder than I was expecting - I will contribute this to the heat.  Final mile was 7:12, I had planned on slowing down, but it just did not happen like I wanted.  Since this is below my pace for a BQ, I will consider it MP, although if truth be told, it actually felt a lot easier than then previous mile.  Still planning on a long run this Saturday with 6-8 miles at MP.

Calves ok? Did you bruise up from yesterday's scraping session?

From James W on Thu, Aug 07, 2008 at 14:14:00

Calves OK, almost no bruising at all. Just a tiny bit of a raspberry on the inside where you were scraping hard.

Hey James- I was reading in the forum that you have had problems with the calves (as noted above too) Anwyay- I pulled one last year and am recovering (recovered ?) currently. Both times, I had about a two week warning period before the pull. What have you found to ward off the final injury? Scraping? Lybi beating your calves senseless? :) Any hints would be most helpful- Hi Lybi! THanks!!!

I think a couple things have helped me:

1. Not ramping up my mileage too fast, or running too many fast/hard miles in a week.

2. Regular stretching - AFTER I run. And slowly transitioning into my normal pace. Sometimes I start off at about 9:00 pace until I feel warmed up, then slowly accelerate until I reach a pace that feels good.

3. By far, the biggest thing has been Lybi scraping and massaging my calves. I have even been able to deal with a recent big twinge through scraping and massage, and have been able to avoid the big injury.

Thanks James- those tips will help a lot. I really was guessing that those three exact things were my culprits... oh and the fact that the final nail in the coffin both times, was a stupid sprint!!! I will NEVER sprint again :) #1 and #2 set me up for disaster. I have a total lack of #3 and need to regularly incorporate it!

THANKS AGAIN!!!!
