Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Ran my standard 4.1 mile loop early this morning.  It was windy.  Wore my HR monitor again to see what my HR was doing.  The first mile my HR was lower because the wind was behind me.  Average HR was probably around 155.  Second mile, HR was still low, stayed below 160, average was probably a couple points higher.  Third mile kept my HR below 160 until the end, when it bumped up to 161 for a short period.  Final mile was run into the wind, and I also increased my speed again, but not as much as yesterday.  Max HR was 173, average HR for the run was 159.  My body felt good after the run, no soreness, HR went right back down within a couple minutes.  My cardiovascular fitness is not yet such that my average HR is in the 120-130 range on an easy run like this, but hopefully if I keep up the work and don't get injured, I will be able to see noticeable changes.

I imagine your max is around 200. With that in mind, the easy run HR should probably be around 145. But if 9:00 mile pace feels good, and your HR hits 160, I'd say do not worry about it. HR monitor could be giving you bogus numbers too, try to verify it manually to be sure.

I have always had a high exercise HR, even when I was in great shape. I am planning on getting a "toy" of my own - it could very well be that the HR data is a bit skewed, but it seems to be pretty consistent. I'd like to see what happens with the data over the next several weeks to see if there is a reduction in my HR simply based on my cardiovascular fitness. If the HR doesn't go down any more, I can probably chalk it up to either: 1. bogus HR data or 2. naturally high exercise HR. Perhaps I can also get an accurate measurement of my max HR, once my body is acclimated to the stress I am placing on it. I certainly think that 155-160 is much better than the upper 170's/lower 180's I was seeing when I was running at 7:00/mile.
