Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

After our planning last night, I could not find Brent anywhere in the staging area, so I hung out with the 3:10 pace group.  Thankfully, Michael, the pace leader, was planning on taking Veyo easy, so this sounded good to me.  I unfortunately had my auto-pause turned on on my Garmin, which messed up my splits, as I had two pit stops I made where the Garmin stopped.  Therefore, no miles splits at this time.  1/2 marathon split was slightly under 1:35, ran the second half in about 1:40, 5 minute positive split.  I had to make a pit stop at mile 18 that cost me about 2 minutes, and at about mile 22, I started to walk a bit.  I decided to run the downhills hard and then walk any uphills, as my left calf was tightening up, and I didn't want to risk pulling it.  At about mile 24, I hooked up with a guy named Blake, and we tried to pull each other along for the last 2 miles.  By this time, my legs were totally trashed, and I was struggling to maintain sub-8:00 miles.  Had to take another walking break, then Blake and I powered it home (when I say powered it home, it was more like limped along at 7:30 pace, which was absolutely the fastest I could run at the end).  I was so caught up in my suffering and was looking for Lybi on the other side of the road that I missed her and the sign she had made for me, and didn't even hear her calling out to me.  Total time was 3:15:00, this is a huge 43 minute PR for me, I am very happy with this time even if I did not hit the BQ this year.  I felt very fit aerobically and my lungs could have continued - my poor legs were just hammered.  I told Lybi that if I had had some more downhill training, I felt sure I could have brought it in at about 3:05.  Congratulations to all the other bloggers out there - everyone did a great job!

Congrats, James! You should be proud of your giant PR! Boston isn't going anywhere-you'll get it!

From MichelleL on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 00:59:26

I can sympathize with your last several miles. I had the same experience for the last couple of miles.

Congratulations on your big PR!!!!

Will you be back next year? Is it too early to ask that?

From Ethan on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 01:49:41

Wow awesome race and a phenominal improvement over your last PR. 43 minutes is quite a lot of time to shave off!

I struggled to make 7:50 paces on thos last 2 miles. They were really hard. The finish line was so close and yet so far away.

Once I came around that last corner I was able to find some more steam. I think I finised at around a 7:30 pace.

My legs are hammered tonight also. And I have to work all night. So this will be a very unproductive night. At least its a weekend and not much going on.

Excellent run, James. It sounds like those last two miles were rough for a lot of us. It was great meeting you at the party and seeing you again during the race. You'll be in Boston before you know it.

From jtshad on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 07:49:57

Congratulations on a great race and the PR! Way to go out there and take on the course.

It was great meeting you and Lybi at the Bloggers party.

Keep running strong.

James- Amazing Job! Your time was awesome! Hope you're icing and relaxing today. It was so fun to meet you at the blog party!

From Clay on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 12:19:00

Great job James, I am very happy for your time and you should be proud of yourself, you left it all out there on the road. How old are you? I thought that was BQ for you...

From Tom on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 13:56:05

Great job James on the PR by 43 minutes! If you just cut off 43 minutes by next year then Boston isn't going to be much of a worry :)

It was fun for Kim and I to meet you and Lybi at the party and also chat after the race. Hope the hotel was kind and let you check out a little late.

From Brent on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 16:57:45

James, I got to the staging area a little late, looked for you. Congradulations on your marathon PR and going for it. I am impressed with the just below 1:35, that is cooking. No doubt, you will qualify for Boston.

Major, Major, commando points, 200+

It was great to meet you and Lybi. I was so impressed by your enthusiam at the Pasta Party. another 50 commando points for your attitude, great, great.

From Paul Petersen on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 18:19:21

James, it would great meeting you. Super job at the race; you have big things ahead.

From Kristina on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 09:20:28

Wow James! Wow! That is amazing. I can in no way imagine how anyone could even walk after running 26 miles. I'm so impressed. And what a great PR. 43 minutes is a lot of time. I'm very happy for you! Now you can take a little break, you deserve it :)

From Cody on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 10:51:54

You definetly take the award for the biggest PR in one race! Awesome. I am sure you will be dropping more chunks of time over the next year and it will become your year of PR's too. Keep up the training and watch out!

From James in Sunny AZ on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 13:21:55

Wow, I am amazed at the number of comments, not just on my report, but on everyone else's as well! This blog has truly turned into a second family of sorts, and meeting so many people in person I did not know before just made the connection even greater. Thanks to everyone for their kind comments and encouragement - I will be back next year (pending lottery results) with a bigger goal, and hopefully better downhill training to prepare my poor quads. In the meantime, I am looking at doing another spring marathon. Call me crazy or a glutton for punishment, especially when my legs are still sore that I have troube sitting down, but I am already ready for more.

From Kerry on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 15:50:47

Congratulations on a great race and a new PR! It was fun meeting you at the dinner and so many others from the blog. I'm already looking forward to next year and PR's all around. With you, I plan to spend a lot more time on hill training :)

From Jon on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 15:54:50

It was so nice meeting you and Lybi finally. And a 43 minute PR!?! Wow! This race can definitely beat you up if you don't train for the downhill- get that next year and BQ will be yours!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Oct 09, 2007 at 11:51:29

One more comment. Good job on depositing the check in the bank, and building a foundation to attack BQ.

Ideas for training from now on. Cross-train (bike/elliptical) until the soreness is gone. Then start running, get back to 40 miles a week, then 50, 60 depending on how you feel. Do not be in a hurry to go over 60, hold it for a couple of years. Eventually you should get to the point where a 10 mile run is something you do for recovery, and you can race a half without residual soreness for longer than a day. Then race lots of halves and 10 Ks. I think if things go well, you can quite easily run 2:50-2:55 next year.

From Lybi on Tue, Oct 09, 2007 at 12:13:29

You are my hero James! I was so excited when you came in I almost fell out of the bleachers. Good luck with those YEARS of 60 mile weeks. Hopefully your wife will be understanding. :) I agree with Sasha about your potential!

From Michael on Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 12:04:02

Way to run James - great effort and great PR - keep it up
