Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Well, in case anyone has been wondering why my entries have been so spotty, last week we were on vacation, and this week I got sick on Wednesday and Thursday and didn't run.  I felt better today and decided it was time to get started again.  I also got my free pair of Grid Tangent 3's from Road Runner Sports this week, so I was anxious to try them out.  I think that my Grid Tangent 2's have pretty much worn themselves out - probably between 350 and 400 miles on them.  So I set out for a nice easy 4-5 mile run.  I felt really good, even though it was still 100 degrees out.  But then disaster struck - after only .6 miles, my right calf gave a mighty twinge (not a pop, mind you!), and my calf started to tighten up.  I was so angry, I was running easy, just trying to get back in the groove, and my body was not cooperating with me at all!  Well, I walked a bit, stretched out my calves, then jogged back home.  Total of 1 whole stinking mile.  Looks like it is crosstraining time . . . I am going to pick up a bike headlamp from wal-mart today so that I can go out and ride my bike and still maintain some fitness while I rehab my calf.  I am hoping I will still be able to do the ADT 1/2 marathon as a good indicator of fitness for St. George.

I know your calf has been troubling you lately. But since you were sick the last 2 days do you think today could have been a hydration issue or some type of injury ?

Two years ago when I was only a "blog lurker" and not yet a member I was having similar problems with my right calf. I believe it was a micro tear or something like that. Hurt like heck, and seemed to come out of nowhere when it hit. I think I took a full month of running off before it stopped hurting.

I hope yours gets right, and soon.

James, good luck on the rehab, do you have any knots in your calf? Maybe a deep tissue massage may help. I have had many tight calf issues, Sylvie has done wonders to free them up.
