Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Ran 6.0 miles this morning.  This was my tempo run day, so I warmed up at a nice easy pace for a mile, then hit my tempo pace.  I ended up running the 2 mile tempo a bit faster than I had intended, but it still felt good, and I definitely felt like I could have sustained it, although I am not sure if I could have sustained it for 4 more miles.  I don't have the Garmin with me right now, so I'm not 100% sure of the splits (will update when I get home), but I am pretty sure each mile was 6:31.  Finished the tempo, walked about 15-20 seconds, then completed the run with 3 nice easy recovery miles at about 9:00 pace.  The tempo run gave me a great deal of confidence for the 5K on Saturday.  I should definitely be able to break 20:00.  I am not going to revise my goals this close to the race, but will just let it play out and see how things go.

Hey James, I'll check the Garmin for you.

Warmup mile - 8:42

2nd mile - 6:33

3rd mile - 6:15 (wow!)

8:57, 8:55, 8:50 for your cool down.

You are going to do so well on your 5K this weekend! You might break 19:00.

What was the HR on the tempo miles? I would say breaking 20:00 should be a non-brainer unless the conditions are extreme. Sub-19:00 is a possibility depending on how hard the 6:15 mile on the tempo felt.

From James in Sunny AZ on Thu, May 24, 2007 at 21:20:05

I didn't get the 305, so I don't have HR monitor function on my Garmin and wasn't wearing my Polar. However, the effort was definitely not all-out. My current plan is to start with a 6:20 mile (or thereabouts) and then try to increase the pace each mile. In order to break 19:00, I would need to run two back-to-back 6:00 miles after the 6:20, and that should leave me about 40 seconds to run the 0.1 miles. Should be possible, but I will have to see how things go. Right now, it looks like the weather will probably be around 80 degrees, which for this time of year is downright nice. The high for Saturday is forecast to be about 100.
