Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - no running - gotta get out of this mode.  I would really like to split my runs up into two semi-equal sections.

PM - 7 easy miles, no Garmin, just with the watch.  In the rain.  It's hard to justify getting some adequate rain gear when it almost never rains here in Phoenix.  What I have is functional, but the water ends up soaking through by the end of the run on my top.  I have some dryroad pants that do a fairly good job with the legs.  Total time for the run was 55:03, average pace of 7:52/mile.  Seems about right, may be a titch short with the distance, but not by much at all.  The run felt good.  One of the nice things about the rain gear is that with the swish-swish of my legs and arms, it is actually very easy to get into a good rhythm.

On another note, I had a disappointing experience today with a race I was planning on entering - I was going to do the Lost Dutchman 1/2 marathon, which is on February 17.  I was all excited about running in it - last year's winning time was  1:36:43.  But then I took a closer look at the date and realized it was on a Sunday.  Now I am trying to decide whether I should run it or not.  I am leaning towards not, since I had decided not to run PF Changs because it was on a Sunday as well.  I don't want to feel like a hypocrite, and I don't want to feel like I am breaking the Sabbath.  Boy, what do you know, just blogging about it actually strengthens my resolve to not run it, regardless of how well I can do.  There is another 1/2 marathon on Feb 2 that I will do instead, called London's run.

Thanks for running outside in the rain so I could have the treadmill! OXOXO

Do the one on the 2nd, you will feel much better if you don't do it on the Sabbath...

James, interesting comment about running on sunday. I have asked two different bishops over the years. They both said they felt it was not breaking the sabbath. But, I did not ask about a race. I am not real active, but, I have several runner friends who take sunday off running, but, have never asked their bishops. Hope you find a good race to test yourself on sunday.

Stay cool, B of BS Rools out

Regarding the rain - unless it is really really cold, you can just wear shorts and a windbreaker jacket and really enjoy it.

Regarding Sunday running. I've never heard a talk in General Conference that praised an athlete for competing or training on Sunday. I've heard numerous talks that praised an athlete for refusing to compete on Sunday even when a lot was at stake. When I open Friend magazine, inevitably almost in every issue there is a story about a kid that refused to compete on Sunday in spite of the pressure from his coach and/or teammates. I think the message from the Church is very clear regarding that.

Definitely a bummer in Arizona or almost anywhere outside of Utah - this eliminates at least 90% of otherwise great races. Which gives me an idea - we should at some point organize a Fast Running Blog Half/Full Marathon in some flat easy-to-get-to place at a lower elevation, and Phoenix area sounds like a great candidate.

Thanks for the words. I have come to the understanding that each of us has to make the decision for ourselves whether running or competing would be considered breaking the Sabbath or not. Even as I was typing my original post, I realized that the personal guidance I had been seeking had already been found, and made my personal decision to not run or compete on the Sabbath. Something that I used in choosing a spring marathon was www.marathonguide.com, which allows you to filter by Saturday marathons. Although there are fewer races here on Saturdays, I thankfully have a 1/2 marathon I am planning on for early February that not only is on a Saturday, but also benefits a children's cancer organization. I agree Sasha, organizing a FRB half/full marathon sounds awesome.

Yes yes yes! We need a Sat. half marathon here. We can call it the Lybi Memorial Run in case I die in the Moab Half.
