Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Ran 1.5 miles with the boys early in the evening, then ran 5 miles later on.  With the 5-miler, I found my pace slowly increasing the further I ran (go figure).  Started out nice and easy at 8:47 for the first mile, then 8:41, then 8:33 for the third mile,  and 8:22 for the 4th mile.  I decided to pick up the pace for the last mile and pushed it pretty good.  Final mile was in 6:55, and I was actually increasing throughout.  Started somewhere in the 7's, and ended up right around 6:00/mile.  I was huffing and puffing fairly good at the end, but I feel like I could have run futher - that was part of the reason I picked up the pace - to give myself an idea of what I am capable of next time I run a 5K (still not sure if I am going to do the evening run or not).  Cooled down and then stretched out after the run, took a cool shower (water here isn't cold anymore, just cool).  I feel good.

Great work! What is your goal for weekly mileage? What is your 5K PR? If you don't know, then you definitely should run next Friday, just to get a baseline.

I second the idea.

OK, OK! , I'll go ahead and run the race. We talked last night and looks like I will get to take the Garmin - Lybi doesn't want it for her race. I have to admit, I am intensely curious about how fast I can run a 5K in. The last time I ran a 5K was the summer after my senior year in high school, and that was somewhere between 17-18 minutes. I have a couple of goals in mind:

1. Bronze (satisfied): 22-23 minutes

2. Silver (happy): 21-22 minutes

3. Gold (ecstatic): 20-21 minutes

4. Platinum (cloud 9): under 20 minutes

I'm not sure what to expect right now, but I know the adrenaline will kick in and I will probably end up running faster than I had anticipated. Hopefully the Garmin will come in there and help me to not take it out too hard.

Easily persuaded, you speed demon. : ) I'm putting my money on the platinum.
