Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Back in the saddle again . . .

AM - ran 5 easy miles.  My left calf was a bit tight - I had woken up in the morning on Saturday with a pretty big cramp in my calf, and I am still trying to work it out.  Since this was my first day back after about a week off, I took it easy.  Total time for this morning's run was 43:34, average pace of 8:43/mile.  This is close enough to my goal pace of 8:45/mile today that I am totally satisfied with my run this morning.  I plan on doing another easy 2-3 miles this evening.  High for today is only supposed to be 96 - yay!  It is finally cooling down (maybe for good?), but the humidity is still way up - 65% humidity this morning.  Looking forward to resuming my training.  I need to get in at least one 20 miler within the next month, and I am debating whether or not to run the White Mountain 1/2 marathon or not (it is on September 15).  The good thing is that it is mostly downhill, so I can work on my downhill form and pace, and it also has a monster of a hill (2 miles long) that puts Veyo to shame.  The bad thing is that it is only 3 weeks before the marathon.  I would appreciate any feedback on this.

PM - ran another 5 easy miles (not continuous), no time, but the pace felt nice and easy.  I put some Absorbine, Jr. on my left calf before my run, and that seems to have helped to loosen up the knot I had.  Leg feels better this evening.  Stretched it out nice and good, ran a little more than I had anticipated, but don't think there will be any ill effects from the extra miles.  Another nice easy day tomorrow as well.

James, you didn't mention how steep the downhill at the 1/2? I would be more concerned if it were a steep downhill. Likely nothing to worry about being 3 weeks out unless the downhill is real steep that may lead to a risk of injury. *Note, me and Syliv are running TOU marathon 3 weeks out from St. George, I wonder how we will recover running 2 marathons 3 weeks apart. good luck.

Well, to give you an idea, last time I ran it, I was running the 1/2 at 8:00 pace (the first 8 miles are gentle downhill), then there is a major uphill for 2 miles, then pretty sharp downhill the last 3 miles. My pace the year I ran it was 8:00 until the big hill, then I ended up walking, and then once I hit the downhill, I shifted gears and was running 6:30 pace. So the last 3 miles is pretty steep. James,

I'm not much help regarding downhill running (I stick to the canals), but the timing of your runs got my attention. I think it would probably be OK to run the half, as long as you do your last 20-miler before the half. For my last two marathons, I ran my last 20-miler four weeks before the race, instead of the recommended 3 weeks before, and I did very well. If you decide to do the race, I would recommend taking it easy afterward (you'll be tapering anyway), and treat the race as an extended tempo run. Runner's World recently had an article on tune-up races as part of training for a longer race. Good luck!
