Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - was planning on my long run of 16 miles, with an 8 mile tempo at MP.  I slept very poorly, and felt very tired this morning, but was still up to try the challenge.  Forgot the Garmin again, was too tired to remember it.  Went to the high school track.  First four miles warmup, total time 33:32, average pace of 8:23/mile.  Took a break, took some clif shot blocks, was wearing my 2-bottle fuel belt.  Then I started the tempo - I ran this too fast to sustain for 8 miles, especially on about 4 hours of sleep.  Ended up only doing 5 miles.  My lungs were doing OK, but my legs were completely shot.  Total time for the 5 mile tempo was 36:00 flat - average of 7:12/mile.  This is probably too fast for my MP, based on my experience this morning - a more realistic goal is going to be 7:30/mile, which will still net me a 3:15.  After the 5 mile tempo, took a break, then ran 4 more easy miles - average pace of 8:40/mile.  Total distance of 13 miles.  I am a little bummed, but will take it in stride.  My body probably needs a little lighter mileage, and I think I am going to hold off on the tempo runs until after I hit 20 miles - I am just not ready for it.  I may or may not get in a few more miles this evening to hit my original goal of 16 miles - depends on how I am feeling.

James, I am not sure from reading your comments: What is your easy pace? Is your easy pace too hard each day? This may be affecting your hard workouts. If your marathon goal pace is 7:30? What should be your easy pace? This is a good question? I have read anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes slower than your marathon pace. You may be running in the junk miles range too much. Sasha likely has a good take on this issue.

Brent, my easy miles are to be around 8:30/mile. Sometimes I end up running them too fast, but that is my goal. I have heard the same thing about your easy miles being 1-2 minutes slower than your MP. I probably need to work on slowing down on my easy days so that I am not worn out on Saturday - however, I do think that today was mostly a reflection of very poor sleep, which I hope to make up for during the day and tonight.

James - 7:30 in the heat of Mesa and on a flat/rolling course will convert to 7:15 pace on the downhills of St. George in cool weather. For the easy runs, it looks like your nervous system is really feisty. Your easy pace should be around 8:45. If you see yourself going faster, pick it up for a mile, run it in 6:00 if you have to, then ease of for the rest of the run thinking about the experience. Do not cut the marathon pace tempos short even if you have not gotten enough sleep - if the pace feels unsustainable, ease off to whatever it takes to go the distance.
