Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - slept in until 5:30, ran 2 easy miles with Sparky, untimed.  I decided when my alarm went off at 5:00 that it was more important this week to make sure I get enough sleep than it was to get in all the miles in the morning.  I will plan on doing another 3 miles this evening, whether on the treadmill or outside.

PM - Okay, I may have done something rather stupid here . . . <start big cheesy grin>.  I went out for a run, and my legs were feeling so good, lets just say that the horses were neighing so much they could not be restrained.  After starting off at what felt like a pretty easy pace, I took off fairly quickly and hit the first half mile at about 6:40 pace, around 1/2 marathon pace.  I apparently sped up from there, because I was at 9:18 for 1.5 miles.  I didn't look at my watch for the second 1.5 miles, but knew the second 1.5 mile split was 9:25.  Total time, 18:44, average pace of 6:15/mile.  This is totally at my 10K pace, and I absolutely could have sustained this for another 3 miles, probably more.  My legs felt and still feel fine, although cardiovascular-wise, I could tell I put in a good effort.  I cooled off, and was amazed at how quickly I felt completely recovered.  Let the smackdown begin . . . <end big cheesy grin>.  I promised Lybi I would not run any more fast miles the rest of this week until it is race time, and I plan to keep that promise.  Please tell me I didn't do anything to jeopardize my chances of breaking 3:00 at St. George!

It's good to throw in a couple of semi-fast miles during the taper week. Yours may have been a little fast but since you are not feeling any ill effects from the run you will be fine. No more speed work for the rest of the week, though.

You're in trouble. Tickling is in order.

From Lybi on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 08:51:44

James is the most ticklish human on the planet, people. It's convenient.

Alrighty then Lybi!

From Tom on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 11:31:57

James you did this early in the week so you should be just fine, just take it easy the rest of the week.

I'm a little jealous of you feeling so good and hitting the 6:15s so easily. You're chances of the sub-3 are looking pretty good I think.

Thanks everybody for the words of encouragement - I was feeling so good after the run, but then Lybi talked some sense into me - "bad boy, James! what were you thinking!" and I started worrying a bit.

Tom, I woldn't worry too much about how your miles felt - your summer training has been much more consistent than mine, and your mileage has been higher. You have also had faster PR's at the 1/2 marathon distance which show that you are ready for that sub-3:00.
