Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - Well, after several days of forced inactivity due to my calf issues, I was finally able to run again this morning.  I took it real easy and just ran 2 miles (so far) with Sparky, untimed, but it felt really good.  We have not had very much time together this week, so Lybi has not had much opportunity to scrape and massage my calf.  But we just decided that we will have her do this during couples scripture study at night - I will read to her while she massages my legs.  Sounds like a good idea to me . . . in fact, we did this last night, and that may have made a difference.  I have a big old knot deep in my calf that needs to get worked out.  At this point, I am still confident I will be able to do St. George.

PM - ran another 4 (fairly) easy miles outside.  Calf felt okay, but I could still feel the knot that was there.  Maybe I'm not getting enough electrolytes or something . . . 'cuz my other calf is starting to get tight as well, but in a different place.  I dunno.  I also noticed that my hips were pretty tight last night, so I am going to start stretching them out again as well.  Average pace of 7:45 on the evening run.

James, after reading your blog today it reminded me of an injury I had in January 2007. New Year's Eve I am on a run and my calf started hurting out of the blue. Not too bad. Still ran a few more days on it. Then on a run it "locked up" and was very painful. I would ice, ib, and stretch. Took 4 days off then ran again. Felt good for a couple of days, then it happened again. This cycle repeated for a couple of weeks. Finally it stopped hurting with less running and more swimming after another 2 weeks. Unfortunately the very next month I started noting my pains in my other leg. That eventually turned into a stress fracture in my femur. I think I may have changed my form some to compensate for my calf and ended up with something worse.

Long story short, I "self diagnosed" myself with "micro tears" in my calf muscle. I just Googled it and saw this article. I am on my lunch break now and did not read the whole thing, but the beginning described my pains dead on. Here's the link - http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=6071

Hopefully this may give you some helpful info or at least lead you in the right direction.
